The Australian Junior Age Division Golf Championship uses Modified distances for different ages. This is a system used in the USA, where rather than having handicaps, juniors play shorter courses depending on their age, and calculate their ‘scoring averages’ on the modified courses. A good 6 year old golfer can have a scoring average of 36 for 9 holes. Then, when he or she turns 8, their course grows with them and they continue to strive to par the course.

At our event, all awards are contained within the age groups, so players are competing only with kids their own age. But, even though there are no overall awards, having this course modification system does allows the young players to compare their scores on an even footing with older kids. Kids who’ve played this format love it, and its very successfully used in other parts of the world, especially the USA.
